Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a silent disease which is characterized by the low bone mineral density (BMD) hence resulting in weak and fragile bones. Osteoporosis leads to porous and hollow bone (like a sponge). Although osteoporosis related fractures can occur in any bone of the body but hips, spine, writs and ribs are the common areas of bone fracture. This disease can develop in anyone, but it is most common in elderly women. Those who have family history of osteoporosis, taking frequent medicines, being thin and low body weight, low sex hormones such as during menopause, aging etc are at the higher risk of developing osteoporosis.

Signs and symptoms: +

Although osteoporosis starts silently and is unknown until a patient suffers from the fracture but many times general symptom appears. These signs and symptoms are as follows:

  • Joint pain
  • Disfigurement
  • Debilitation
  • Patient may lose height as much as 6 inches
  • Severe back pain
  • Muscular pain
  • Neck pain
  • Tenderness

General diagnostic tests suggested:+

There are several diagnostic tests carried out to find out if patient has osteoporosis, which includes,
DEXA Scan: Dual X-ray Absorptiometry is the most common test carried out to diagnose osteoporosis, which majorly measures total body density to gauge fracture risk.
Bone Densitometry: This test is also carried out to check the bone density quickly and accurately.
Other Methods: Apart from all the above mentioned diagnostic tests ultrasound and quantitative computed tomography (QCT) is also done to diagnose osteoporosis.

Blood Test: Doctor advises for blood tests so that the metabolism of the bone can be tested.
